Techniques
Spot Color: The most common type of printing for basic designs and logos with solid fill areas is called spot color screen printing. D2 Productions can print a maximum of 12 colors on our large automatic presses.
Spot Color with Half Tones: Similar to spot color but incorporating gradients of those colors to give depth to a design, yet not as complicated as a full color process design.
4 Color Process: Photographic reproduction on white or light garments is done using CYMK, or four color process screen printing.
Simulated Process: Photographic reproduction on colored or dark garments is done using simulated process screen printing. This is the most difficult and costly type of screen printing and uses up to 8-10 screens per design, but produces spectacular results.
Direct-to-Garment (DTG): The most eco-friendly garment decorating method, DTG offers an unlimited number of colors per print location at a low cost point for smaller run orders. DTG utilizes a water-based ink system to provide a soft-hand feel. Requires no screens or set up and works fine with rasterized images of at least 300dpi. DTG is limited to the uses on white or light colored garments. We cannot print an ink color that is lighter than the shirt color being used. DTG printed garments can be as durable as screen printed garments.
Inks
Plastisol: Super durable and looks great on any color garment. Formulated to achieve superior opacity and color matching accuracy, plastisol inks are the most commonly used inks for garment imaging. Made of PVC with an oil base for flow and viscosity.
Discharge: Discharge is an activator which is added to a water-based ink and, when printed, removes the garment’s color dye. Usually, this will result in a natural tobacco-like color. If tinted with a color resin, the discharge will remove and replace the garment's original color in a one-step process. Resulting color varies according to the original dye of the fabric. All discharge inks are printed on a select range of 100% cotton garments. Use this process if you want the softest possible option for black garments and want to print a design with softer edges and less detail.
Water Based: Water-based inks produce ultra soft prints and are the most eco-friendly inks available. Water-based inks are used by organizations with a desire to maintain a green profile and fashion-oriented companies looking for a soft-to-the-hand feel. With the consistency of water and a translucent base, designing for these inks should be reserved for minimal detail and color printed on an organic fabric. Truly an ink for those looking to print green.
